The John Holtger Racing Team was back at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the 3rd round of the U.S. Legend Cars West 2018-2019 Silver State racing series this past weekend.
17 drivers lined up to compete on the 1.8-mile version of the asphalt road course. Of the 17 drivers, 9 were in the Young Lion class and 8 were in the Semi-Pro class. The U.S. Legend Cars group running the race threw a big twist into the weekend when they announced that the race would be ran backwards!
Saturday brought some challenges, as it rained most of the day. John felt these conditions on the track as he spun out in one corner and did a slide wide on another. However, he still finished 3rd in the Young Lion class, and 5th overall!
Sunday was one for the for books. The weather cleared up and John ran the fastest lap overall in practice, and finished the heat race in front! That celebration ended quickly when John found out his right-side wheel base was a 16th of an inch too long, which resulted in a DQ and a starting position at the back for the race.
John took the added challenge of starting in the back well, and really showed his strength behind the wheel! He started in P17 and by the end of the 2nd lap he was up to P2! By the time the white flag came out John was leading the race! Unfortunately, the Semi-Pro leader slipped by him on the last hard left-hand corner. They drag raced to the finish line and John missed it by 1 car length. John finished 1st place in the Young Lion class, and 2nd overall! It was truly a great race, and a fun weekend!
John’s win this weekend leaves him 2nd in the series points, only 2 points away from 1st place for the Young Lion class. This weekend, Feb 9th and 10th, will be the final weekend of the series and the deciding race for the division championship. Unfortunately, John will not be participating in this last round. John is being presented as the 2018 Lucas Oil Midwest Mod Kart Short Course Champion at the Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League Pro & Sportsman 2018 Banquet!
Overall, John’s involvement in his 1st year of racing U.S. Legend Cars has been very successful! We appreciate the support and dedication of his sponsors, crew, fans, family, and everyone else that has helped make this a successful endeavor! Stay tuned for the start of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing season…it’s only 1 week away!
